People with Disabilities |
The overall aim of the Project for People with Disabilities in Cork City Partnership is to achieve the inclusion of people with disabilities within integrated local development. This effectively means that the core objective is to assist the process of promoting the inclusion of disabled people in the social, cultural and economic life of Cork City. People with disabilities themselves make a significant contribution to the Cork City Partnership local development programme by virtue of their proactive involvement.
The guiding principle of the disability project is that the direction of the project should come from disabled people themselves. Underpinning this principle is an acknowledgement that people with disabilities are the experts to determine their own needs. Disability proofing of every action within the Plan for Social Inclusion is evident as a consequence. Disability Awareness Training is also a key action that has been introduced to schools, youth and community settings and to front line local authority staff in Cork to bring disability issues to their attention. There is now an ongoing consultation process between people with disabilities and many statutory bodies and service providers within Cork City. Cork City Partnership facilitates meetings with disabled people and City Council staff relative to new developments and refurbishments within Cork City. This group also assists with access audits in that regard. This ensures there is a firsthand disability perspective brought to bear on all new developments.
Meetings are held at regular intervals with service providers such as Bus Eireann, Irish Rail, Aer Rianta, Port of Cork, FÁS, which allows for direct interfacing between people with disabilities as service users. Issues affecting disabled people as service users are on the agenda at such meetings. Information giving is also a fundamental component of the disability project and referrals are made for people with disabilities in this regard. The project also produces a monthly newsletter which has a strong disability focus. The "Cork Shout" newsletter is sent to individuals and groups in the disability sector. It is also distributed to service providers and statutory bodies in the Cork area free of charge. Information is also provided in various formats and these are available on request. If you wish to participate in any of the groups or if you wish to receive the monthly newsletter please contact the disability office in Cork City Partnership
