Cover Letter |
A good cover letter complements your CV and should not duplicate it. It introduces you to the employer and should focus on their needs and highlight your suitability.
Before you even try to write the letter make sure you have done your research.
- Have job descriptions and all relevant information on the company and the job.
- Address your letter to a specific person. If necessary call the company directly and ask the receptionist the name and title of the appropriate contact person.
Content
Your cover letter should have three major paragraphs.
Opening paragraph
- Specify why you are writing (in response to an advertisement or on a speculative basis)
- Advise that you have enclosed your Curriculum Vitae
Middle paragraph should answer most of the questions below and focus on the employers needs.
- Why should they employ you? What do you have to offer?
- What is the relevance of your training / education, work experience etc. to the requirements of the job?
- Why do you want to work for that particular company?
Final paragraph
- Thank them for the time and consideration given to your application.
- Request an interview.
Sign off
- Yours sincerely if sent to a named person – recommended
- Yours faithfully if Dear Sir or Madam – maybe you should phone the receptionist!
- Sign the letter personally
Before you post your cover letter and CV recheck your letter or get someone else to double check it.
- Make sure you have kept to the point and have not duplicated your CV.
- Make sure you have not said “I” too many times.
- Check that it looks professional without spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.
- Have you used clear everyday English?
Photocopy the cover letter for your file in preparation for your interview.
Cover letters by email
Many job applications are made by email and the cover letter is likely to be the first thing read. It will influence whether an employer will take the time to open your attached Curriculum Vitae so is more important than ever.
Email letters are usually shorter than traditional letters, so take advantage of the subject line to make your email stand out.
- Is YOUR email address appropriate? If in doubt get a new email address specifically for job search.
- Make sure to include your full name and contact information in the email.
- Use a font that is easy to open - Times New Roman or Arial are recommended.
- Spelling and grammar still count even in emails.
- Typing and layout are very important if you are looking for an administration job.
Check your emails regularly. You don’t want to miss out on a job interview.
