Application Forms |
Many employers favour application forms rather than CVs as they ensure that all applicants provide exactly the same information. This makes it easier for them to short list applicants for interview.
Before completing an Application Form
- Research the company thoroughly. The internet is invaluable in finding out the most up to date information on a company. Check for a website. Has the company been in the news lately? How do they compare to their competitors?
- Familiarise yourself again with the Job Advertisement and the Job Description / Person Specifications if available.
- Read through the Application Form before you write anything. Look at the general lay-out of the form and the sequence of questions so that you avoid repetition.
Completing the Form
- Photocopy the original form and do a rough version. When you come to fill in the real form you’ll need to get it right first time.
- Follow the instruction on the form. If it says write in black pen or in block capitals, do so. Generally it is better to use a black pen as it photocopies more easily.
- Write neatly. If your handwriting is difficult to read you could use block capitals or get it typed. Do not cross out or use tippex.
- Read the questions carefully to ensure you understand exactly what the employer is looking for. Make your answers relevant, personal and interesting.
- Use action phrases, particularly verbs as they show an action oriented person.
- Fill every part of the form. If a section doesn’t apply to you, write N/A in the box. Do not leave gaps.
- You don’t need a cover letter if there is a section for Additional Information. This is your opportunity to sell yourself but focus on the company needs and highlight your suitability.
- Consult your referees before naming them.
- If you send the form directly to the company make sure you get the person’s name, title and company name right. You don’t want to put them off before they have opened your application.
- Make sure that spelling is correct and get someone to double check it for errors. Only then should you fill in the original application form.
- Don’t forget to sign the application form.
Photocopy the completed form before sending it off. If you get an interview you’ll have a reminder of what you wrote.
